“I consider Dan Standish the reigning king of Barossa Shiraz”.
Joe Czerwinski – Wine Advocate
Drawing from his impressive winemaking experience that spans over three decades and three different continents, Dan Standish now bottles some of the most sought after wines from Australia. Aside from working at top properties in California and Rioja, Standish was the head winemaker at Torbreck in the late 1990s. With that experience he started his own label, home to a range of small production cuvees and site-specific bottlings that showcase unique expressions of old vine Shiraz. Each of the named wines comes from a specific vineyard in a different part of Barossa. Generally, the wines see about 20% new oak (all French), with the proportion of whole clusters varying, depending on the vintage and the vineyard. Also depending on the vintage, Standish bottles all, some or none of the wines, with any barrels that don’t make the cut being sold in bulk.
Recent vintages from Standish have received multiple high 90s scores and fantastic press from international critics. The 2018 releases have the potential to mark the zenith of Standish’s winemaking. His flagship Standish bottling along with the Lamella Shiraz are both potentially a perfect 100 point score. Proof of the overall vintage quality, however, comes from the Relic (a Shiraz/Viognier blend that pays homage to Standish’s admiration for the wines of Cote-Rotie) and the 100+ year old vines used to bottle the Schubert Theorem Shiraz. Both of these wines have equally impressive barrel scores that speak to the strength of this lineup as a whole.
With this in mind, I am pleased to offer all four of Standish’s highly rated wines from the 2018 vintage with tasting notes and scores from the Wine Advocate.
Cases (6x75cl) 2018 Standish Lamella @ £359.00 IB per case
98-100 Points “Another potentially perfect wine, the 2018 Lamella Shiraz, from the Eden Valley, is full-bodied and velvety in texture. Offering swirls of complex mixed berries, tea and spice, it finishes long and tannic, with plenty of backbone and structure, plus intriguing hints of espresso and chocolate. In contrast to The Standish, it’s more impressive, while The Standish is more opulent and generous”- Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
Cases (6x75cl) 2018 Standish the Standish @ £359.00 IB per case
98-100 Points “The 2018 The Standish Shiraz (a sample blend from barrel) is a bit stalky (it’s about 50% whole cluster), but it’s gorgeously perfumed, with hints of herbal tea, raspberries, blackberries and licorice. It just exudes complexity, while also being full-bodied, plush and creamy, with a long, elegant finish. This seamless beauty is a candidate for perfection”- Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
Cases (6x75cl) 2018 Standish The Relic @ £344.00 IB per case
96-99 Points “Despite being only 2% Viognier, in its current state, Standish’s 2018 The Relic Shiraz-Viognier shows prominent notes of stone fruit and spice, plus the blackberries and blueberries of the Shiraz. Full-bodied, lush and creamy-textured, with a long, silky finish, this beauty should drink well for a couple of decades after its release next year”- Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
Cases (6x75cl) 2018 Standish The Schubert Theorem @ £344.00 IB per case
96-98 Points “Mint, sage and thyme accent blackberry and black cherry fruit in the 2018 The Schubert Theorem Shiraz. Full-bodied and rich without being heavy, it finishes tremendously long, with silky, cocoa-powder-like tannins. It should drink well for a couple of decades”- Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
