Fontodi is a wine producer in the Chianti Classico region of Tuscany. It is known particularly for its Super Tuscan wine, Flaccianello delle Pieve, a full-bodied varietal Sangiovese. As well as the Flaccianello della Pieve, the Fontodi portfolio includes the Chianti Classico Riserva wine Vigna del Sorbo, which is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. To cap off the range they do a number of classic Tuscan wines including a Chianti Classico which is always a winner.
I have tried the range a number of times and can recommend the wines. They consistently make wines which can be drunk young, or with a few years of bottle age on them. With this in mind I am pleased to offer wines from the 2015 vintage. Consistent scores and notes from both the Wine Advocate (Monica Larner) and Vinous Antonio Galloni) they are a star of Tuscany.

98 points…..”I’m hardly surprised to report that Fontodi’s 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is one of the best wines recorded in this report of new releases from Tuscany. This wine sits as tall and as proud as the Colosseum in Rome or the Pyramids of Giza in its undeniable glory and beauty. It would be impossible to exaggerate its many lasting attributes and qualities. Perhaps the most remarkable is the smooth and seamless nature of its many complicated moving parts. It produces abundant power, intensity and elegance as if this were the easiest accomplishment in the world. But we all know that’s far from the truth. Despite the heat of the vintage, this wine is constructed with firm building blocks as if it were from a cooler year. That’s the Panzano magic in a nutshell. This vintage is very young and tight, and you need to exercise patience to allow it enough time to evolve.”- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. Drinking 2020-2050
98 points.…” The 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is truly remarkable. An exotic mélange of black cherry jam, chocolate, grilled herbs and spice melds together in a huge, beautifully layered wine of exceptional class and pedigree. The 2015 manages to be dense and rich, but never overdone. The 2015 spent 20 months in French oak, 80%, followed by 6 months in cask. It is the final phase of aging in large wood that seems to help integrating the smaller oak influence. The 2015 is shaping up to be a modern-day icon. There’s not much more to it than that.”- Antonio Galloni, Vinous. Drinking 2022-2045.

96+ points…”The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo (100% Sangiovese) is a wine that inspires a deep, deep breath into your glass. There’s so much to take in and admire. So where to start? First, the wine shows a beautiful appearance that is thick and dark but allows for just enough ambient light to make it shine with ruby rays from deep inside. Then you have the bouquet that presents a solid wall of interwoven and ultimately beautifully balanced aromas. There is dark fruit, tobacco, leather, spice and polished river stone. Lastly, the mouthfeel reveals a similar level of extreme flavor equilibrium with very fine but still very young tannins. That mid-weight structure, matched to the wine’s natural acidity, is a major guarantee of longevity. Bottle production in this vintage is 30,000 units strong.”- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. Drinking 2020-2045
97+ points…..”Another captivating wine in this range, the 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is all class. A rush of dark cherry, plum, sage, lavender and menthol races across the palate. Deep and powerful, yet also remarkably light on its feet, the 2015 has it all. Moreover, the 2015 is one of the most refined Vigna del Sorbos yet. It won’t be long before the 2015 is recognized as one of the all-time great Vigna del Sorbos. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti prefers whole berry ferments in order to maintain as much freshness as possible. In recent years, Manetti has reduced punchdowns to just once a day in fermentation. The gentler approach to extraction comes through loud and clear.”- Antonio Galloni, Vinous. Drinking 2022-2045.
Cases 6 x 75cl, 2015 Fontodi Chianti Classico @ £79 per case 6
91 points..…”This is a great vintage for Sangiovese, and Fontodi embraces this fact with exuberance and enthusiasm. The 2015 Chianti Classico offers tight and precise fruit characteristics with crisp forest berry, cassis and dried blueberry. The wine is profoundly steady and straight with absolutely no rough edges. This is a lean to mid-weight red with balanced acidity tucked in on the finish. Some 200,000 bottles were produced.”- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. Drinking 2018-2028
93 points…”The 2015 Chianti Classico is outrageously beautiful. Rich and seductive, the 2015 expresses the radiance of the year while retaining a good bit of translucence and energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and crushed flowers add elements of brightness to this classy, super-polished Chianti Classico. More than anything else, though, I am simply blown away by the wine’s quality. A decade ago, Giovanni Manetti made darker more concentrated wines. Today, the Fontodi wines speak to finesse. The Chianti Classico is a great place to see that. It was aged in equal parts cask and neutral barrique. .”- Antonio Galloni, Vinous. Drinking 2020-2035
